Roofing 101: Types of Structural Roofs

If you’re considering a full replacement for your roofing system, you will no doubt have countless conversations with your contractor. A new roof is a huge investment, and you want to maximize its value as much as you can. Communication is a crucial part of the planning stage, and the best way to communicate clearly with a professional is if you both understand each other completely. You don’t have to be a full-blown roofer to know the basics of roofing, but it does pay to be familiar with the most common types.

Let our roofing experts from Quality Assurance Roofing explain the different roof structures and the many ways they differ from each other.

Gable Roofs

There’s a considerable chance your home is currently under a gable roof right now. This is, by far, the simplest and most common roof structure out there. Gable roofs are distinguishable by the large triangular area that’s formed underneath the highest point of a pitched roof. Homes with a simple rectangular floor plan will often have gables on the two ends of their walls.

Hip Roofs

Unlike the flat triangular area of gable roofs, hip roofs will have an additional roofing panel at both ends, creating a somewhat square or rectangular-based pyramid. Hip roofs and gable roofs can be combined in a cross-hip or cross-gable design. These are more common in homes with an L-shaped floor plan.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs are pretty straightforward. There are no peaks, valleys, dormers or any other extra structure on a flat roof. Flat roofs are typically found on commercial and industrial buildings, but it’s not uncommon to see contemporary and modern-contemporary residential buildings use them as well.
