Basic Guide to Soffits

Soffits cover up the eaves to prevent the rafters from being totally exposed. Furthermore, they also protect the roofing system from the elements and prevent issues that could potentially result in rotting and mold growth.

Aesthetically, soffits may seem like an insignificant detail. But with the right style and color, they can make a huge impact on your home’s curb appeal.

Read on to know more about two of the most popular types of soffits, namely vinyl and aluminum.

Vinyl and Aluminum Soffits

Vinyl soffits are known for being sturdy and low-maintenance, and they also come in a variety of styles, textures and grains, promising a customized look for your home. They are also generally cheaper than aluminum soffits. However, keep in mind that vinyl soffits may also have the tendency to become brittle and discolored after constant or regular exposure to sunlight.

Aluminum soffits, on the other hand, also have a reputation for durability and minimal upkeep. They are quite strong so they don’t crack or chip easily. Moreover, they don’t attract much dirt so keeping them clean is fairly simple. Aluminum soffits are typically more expensive than vinyl soffits.

Maintenance

Keeping your soffits in good condition does not only benefit the soffits themselves, but your roofing as well. Ensure that your soffits are sealed and caulked properly, and check for mildew. You can remove mildew from the soffits by using a soft brush and a solution of bleach and water.

Don’t forget to pay attention to your attic and gutters, too. Make sure that your attic fan is working and your gutters are regularly cleaned. Get rid of leaves or any debris that may build up over time and affect the performance of your entire gutter system.
