About Asphalt Shingle Granules and What They Do

Asphalt shingles are one of the most commonly used roofing materials in the U.S. They are easy to install and more cost-effective than their counterparts. They also offer up to 20 years of service life, making them a very popular choice.

One of the most notable features of asphalt shingles is the protective granules embedded on the base material.

What Are Asphalt Shingle Granules?

Asphalt shingles are made of a few raw materials, namely the fiberglass, asphalt, sealant, release film and granules. Combined together, they make up the shingles that are placed on your roof. The granules are the most visible part of your shingles. These granules are a critical component of what your shingles are made of.

What Do the Granules Do?

These granules are responsible for shielding the roofing material from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. This will then help in the longevity of the entire roofing system. These tiny pieces of crushed rock can come with additional features, including copper granules that can help minimize algae growth on the roof surfaces. Specialized granules can also be added to the mix to boost the roof’s solar reflectance, which can contribute to your home’s energy efficiency.

What Happens When Granules Erode?

Long-term wear and tear due to exposure to harsh weather can cause asphalt shingles to erode and shed off the protective granules. However, this should not happen within a few years after its installation. With regular inspection and maintenance, your granules should last as long as the shingles.

Excess granule buildup in your gutters or near the downspouts are often an indication of the roof’s old age – and a sign that a new roofing system is due. If left unattended, you are running the risk of water damage to the roof, attic and possibly your entire home structure.

Erosion of your asphalt shingle’s granule coating should be kept an eye on for the entirety of your roof’s service life. Be sure to have your roof inspected regularly by the professionals at Quality Assurance Roofing. We offer roof inspections, maintenance and repair to keep the whole system in check.
